Coffee Shop Website: What’s Worth Having (and What’s a Waste of Money)

Someone deciding where to get coffee makes the call in seconds, usually on a phone. Here’s what a small independent café’s website actually needs — and the features that rarely earn back what they cost.

A café website answers one question well: is this worth walking into right now? Accurate hours, a real menu, and how far away it is settle that in seconds. Almost everything else is optional — and for a small independent shop, some of the “modern” features that sound appealing rarely pay for themselves.

The pages a coffee shop site needs

  • Home — the vibe, the coffee, and where you are.
  • Menu — drinks and food, real prices, kept current.
  • Location & hours — a map and hours you can actually trust.
  • About — a short paragraph on what makes the place worth choosing.
  • Contact — phone or WhatsApp for questions, catering or private events.

Four or five pages is genuinely enough — this is one of the smallest, simplest sites in this whole series, and that’s fine. It doesn’t need to be bigger to work.

What’s worth having

Real photos of your actual coffee and space — not stock photography of a generic café.
  • Accurate, current hours — the single most common reason a customer gets frustrated with a small business website is arriving to a closed door the site said was open.
  • A real Google Map with the pin in the right place, not just a text address.
  • Real photos of the drinks, food and space — a handful of genuine photos beats a full set of beautiful stock images.
  • One clear way to ask a question — a phone number or WhatsApp link for catering requests, private bookings, or “do you have oat milk.”

What’s a waste of money for most independent cafés

A few features sound like they’d help but, for a single-location independent café, usually cost more to build and maintain than they bring back:

  • Full online ordering with payment — a genuinely useful feature for high-volume or multi-location operations, but a significant ongoing cost and maintenance burden for a single small shop. Listing on delivery platforms customers already use covers most of the same need with none of the overhead.
  • A dedicated branded mobile app — apps have real ongoing costs (store fees, updates, support) and most customers won’t download one for a single café they visit occasionally. A fast, well-built website does the same job for a fraction of the cost.
  • A complex loyalty program platform — a simple punch card, physical or digital, usually delivers the same repeat-visit behavior without a recurring software subscription.

This changes with scale. A café doing high delivery volume or running several locations may well justify all three. The point isn’t that these features are bad — it’s that for a single small shop, they’re often solving a problem the business doesn’t actually have yet.

Wifi and seating: the detail people actually search for

A one-line note about wifi and outlets answers a question a lot of visitors are actually asking.

A surprising amount of café traffic is people specifically looking for somewhere to sit and work or study — and deciding based on whether there’s wifi, outlets, and enough seating. A single sentence covering this (wifi available, plenty of outlets, quiet in the mornings) is cheap to add and answers a real, common question before someone even walks in.

Frequently asked questions

Does a small coffee shop need online ordering?

Usually not as part of its own website. For most single-location cafés, listing on delivery platforms customers already use covers the same need without the ongoing cost of building and maintaining a payment system. It becomes worth considering at higher volume or with multiple locations.

Should the menu be a PDF or a real web page?

A real web page. Café menus change often — seasonal items, price updates — and a text-based page can be updated in a minute. A PDF or photographed menu means every small change requires a full re-upload, so it tends to just go stale.

Is a branded mobile app worth it for a small café?

Rarely, for a single-location independent shop. Apps carry real ongoing costs and most customers won’t download one for a café they visit occasionally. A fast, well-built website covers the same need at a fraction of the cost and effort.

Should I mention wifi and seating on the website?

Yes — a meaningful share of café visits are people specifically looking for somewhere to work or study, and they’re deciding partly based on wifi, outlets and seating. A single sentence covering this is cheap to add and answers a real, common question.

What’s the single biggest mistake on coffee shop websites?

Outdated hours. Arriving at a café the website said was open, only to find it closed, is one of the fastest ways to lose a customer for good — and it’s one of the easiest things to get right.
